Airy Summer Sling

The Airy Summer Hobo is one of my all time favorite patterns on the site. I use my bags at least once a week but they are really starting to show wear, not the crochet part, the yarn actually gave out. No surprise though, I walk to get groceries and load everything into them to carry home (it can get kind of heavy when I walk home with milk and juice). I've repaired several but I bought some cotton yarn and have been making several new ones.

The Airy Summer Hobo is one of the most popular patterns on the site but the number one complaint is that people have a hard time handling the large 10mm hook. For any of you that have gotten hand cramps from the large hook this new pattern is for you, the Airy Summer Sling pattern is a smaller modified version of the Hobo but crocheted with a J hook.

What you need:

3-4 balls of Bernat Handicrafter (68 yards each)
Size J (6mm) hook
Clip to keep your place
Yarn needle
Scissors

 Bag:
Work in continuous rounds

  • Chain 2
  • Round 1: Work 6 sc in first chain
  • Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around - 12 st
  • Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around - 18 st
  • Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around - 24 st
  • Round 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around - 30 st
  • Round 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around - 36 st
  • Round 7: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, rep from * around - 42 st
  • Round 8: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts, rep from * around - 48 st
  • Round 9: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 7 sts, rep from * around - 54 st
  • Round 10: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 8 sts, rep from * around - 60 st
  • Round 11: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 9 sts, rep from * around - 66 st
  • Round 12: sc in each sc around (back loops only)
  • Round 13: dc in each st around
  • Round 14-25: tr in each st around
Instead of crocheting into the stitch, crochet between the stitches on doubles and triples, kind of like filet crochet spaces

  • Round 26: dc in each st around
  • Round 28-29: sc in each st around
  • *ch 1, dc 5,  (this is the start of the handle) rep from * till handle is a comfortable length, I did 36 rows. I was making this bag for a child so when I make another I will make the handle longer.
  • sc to join to opposite side of bag
  • Finish off and weave in ends

I say 3-4 balls of yarn because I just broke into the 4th in the middle of the handle, if I had made the handle longer I'm sure I would have used more of the 4th ball.

The finished bag is just about 12 x 12 inches.
