These simple poi are great for beginners or practicing new moves.
What you need:
Cotton yarn, I used Sugar 'n Cream
Size I (5.5 mm) hook
Small bean bags or balls
Clip to keep place
Scissors
Work in continuous rounds
- Chain 2
- Round 1- Work 6 sc in first chain
- Round 2- Work 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sc
- Round 3- *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around - 18 sc
- Round 4- *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around - 24 sts
- Round 5-10- Sc in each sc around
- Insert beanbag or ball
- Round 11: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around - 18 sts
- Round 12: *Sc2tog, sc in next st, rep from * around - 12 sts
- Round 13: Sc2tog around.
- 2 sc across gap to center it for chain of the handle
- Chain 70
- Sl st in 20th chain from hook (creates finger loop)
- Tie overhand knot over sl st
- Cut off left tail of unused thread
I like shorter poi since I am not very tall. For my husband's poi (the blue) I chained 90 since he has longer arms. Always check length before tieing finger loops.
The "beanbags" I used are little t-shirt bags 3.5 inches wide and filled with 1/4 cup of rice.
You could use any lightweight ball. If using a tennis ball you will have to do an extra row or two of increases and decreases.
