I was raised by my grandparents. I grew up hearing about the fads of the 1950's, maybe that is why I have always thought coon skin caps were cool. Not the real raccoon ones, the only way you could catch me wearing a real one is if that coon ate my rabbit, just the fake fur ones.

What you need:
Matching colors of a worsted weight and eyelash yarn x2
(I used a full skein of brown eyelash, the black was just scrap)
Size N (10 mm) hook
Scissors
Yarn needle
Hat:
Work in continuous rounds using 1 strand worsted weight and 1 strand eyelash held together
- Chain 2
- Round 1: Work 6 sc in first chain
- Round 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around - 12 sts
- Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around - 18 sts
- Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around - 24 sts
- Round 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, rep from * around - 30 sts
- Round 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, rep from * around - 36 sts
- Round 7: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, rep from * around - 42 sts
- Round 8: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts, rep from * around - 48 sts
- Round 9: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 7 sts, rep from * around - 54 sts
- Round 10: sc in each sc around, back loops only -54 sts
- Rounds 11-19: sc in each sc around -54 sts
- Slip stitch tie off, leave tail of yarn to sew on tail
Tail:
The tail was worked flat. Each stripe is 12 stitches wide and 4 rows tall. I worked till I ran out of brown but if you have enough you may wish to make your tail longer. At the end of tail do a running stitch and pull tight to gather. Tie a knot then whip stitch the sides together. Sew tail to bottom back of hat.
Brush your hat!
I'm not kidding, go grab your hair brush. Gently brush all over your hat/tail. This helps bring up some of the eyelash yarn that has gotten trapped in the stitches. A brushed hat is a happy hat :)
My hubby was kind enough to let me stick a raccoon on his head. My husband has a large head and lots of hair so the hat was a little tight on him. I would say this would fit a young teen or an adult chick better. If your hubby/dad/granddad wants one you may wish to add an extra increase row to the top of the hat.
